Hallam Portrait Artist of the Year

This Thursday 13th June - Hallam Art Group will be holding a portrait competition based on the television show Portrait Artist of the Year.

For those unfamiliar with the programme, artists have just four hours to paint a portrait of a celebrity sitter.  In the TV competition, each celebrity is painted by three artists. At the end of the day, the judges select a final three - and then the winner. We will change a couple of things to make it work for our shorter evening sessions.

On Thursday, competing artists will have just 80 minutes of painting time to make a start on their portraits. They are then allowed to finish the portrait at home.

The following week the paintings will come back for judging - and the judges will select a final three and the winner.
There will be a prize!

Glyn Williams will be hosting (and not competing!)

Members can participate in three ways:

1. We need artists competitors.  You don’t need to be an expert portrait-painter.
2. We need sitters (we have two volunteers already - but may need more) this could be yourself or a family member.
3. We need audience members.  The audience gets to watch paintings being created.  If we are to succeed in recreating the feel of the TV competition - spectators are essential.  It is fascinating to watch other people painting.

Please email your preference to Glyn or Rosemary

Rules

  • Artists can use any medium.  Oil, acrylics, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, embroidery or collage ( If artists own standing easels, please bring them.

  • Artists can take reference photographs to help them finish at home.

  • Artists may be interrupted mid-paint to give interviews about their creative process.

  • Artists should (in theory) spend no more than four hours in total on the final work.

  • Sitters need not be members. They can wear whatever they like to give the artists a challenge.

  • Spectators must mill about in the background watching the magic happen.

The judging criterial will be:

This should be a light-hearted and enjoyable event.   We encourage you to participate.
