Hallam Portrait Artist of the Year

We wondered: “what would it be like to take part in a painting competition like Portrait Artist of the Year. So on Thursday 13th June - we held our own version.

Three of our members were kind enough to sit for the event. And in oil, acrylic, chalk pastel, graphite and charcoal … fourteen artists painted their likeness.

On the night they had just 80 minutes to get the likeness down. But the competition allowed artists to finish off their portraits at home.

On Thursday the 20th - the finished works came back for judging. Our judging panel had a difficult job on their hands. The criteria were to select works based on their uniqueness, the capture of character and the likeness to the sitter.

Pippa Mottishead

Shortlisted for uniqueness was this chalk pastel painting of Ian. Pippa used bright primary colours which she blended to create this unique look.

Barbara Fox was shortlisted for this painting of Clare. The judges thought this caught her character.

Vim Storr

Vim’s watercolour of Ian was shortlisted for its astonishing likeness.

But the winner of the event was Ishbel Gordon with this sensitive and accurate portrait of Tarnya. This combined unique mark-making, with likeness and character. A well-deserved winner and I think a painting which would not look out of place on the television competition which we were emulating.

Ishbel Gordon - Winner!
